Gone Fishin'

IT'S ALL A BIT FISHY TO ME

By no means a fisherman's tale.

My grandfather was an officer in the Merchant Navy and died when his ship sank. My father-in-law was a trawler-man who sailed from the port of Hull, in England, fishing in Icelandic waters. When my husband was about 12 his dad had an accident on board the trawler. A winch slipped severing all his fingers on one hand. He had to be cradle lifted over the choppy seas to be taken to hospital in Iceland.

With this family history you would think that Hubby and I would be great sailors but we are not. Both of us get seasick at the slightest movement of water. One thing though, Hubby loves fishing. He does not fish as often as he would like due to logistics but absolutely loves fishing. This may be sea, pond, stream, river or lake fishing. So if he had his way I would be a Fishing Widow.

My one dabble at fishing was when we were on holiday in Malta. Hubby had taken a telescopic fishing rod and the necessary bits and bobs. As he fished with locals in Bugibba Harbour I laid sunbathing and reading. Finally I had a try at fishing myself. Hubby showed me how to cast. Three casts and three fish caught, the rod was promptly taken back never to be returned. I cannot say I totally understood the appeal of fishing but I almost did.
